[GigaOM Study]

Cassandra Total Cost of Ownership Study

Is DataStax Astra DB’s fully managed, serverless Cassandra-as-a-Service really more cost effective than managing your own Cassandra clusters? Analyst firm GigaOm conducted a comprehensive study in July 2022, comparing the 3-year TCO for Astra DB against that of self-managed Cassandra.

The GigaOm report examined the full cost and value of Astra DB and self-managed Apache Cassandra. Costs include dedicated compute hardware (for self-managed Cassandra), cost per read and write operation (on serverless Cassandra), storage growth (each write operation adds new data), and people cost in the three-year total cost of ownership calculations.

GigaOm found that serverless Astra DB reduces TCO by over 85% as compared to self-managed Cassandra!

How does Astra DB deliver these radical cost savings?

  • Astra DB has 95% lower staffing costs
  • Astra DB requires 80% lower infrastructure costs
  • Astra DB has 3x less complexity than self-managed Cassandra
  • Astra DB can support the same throughput with lower p95 and p99 percentile latencies at a lower cost than self-managed Cassandra

Cassandra Total Cost of Ownership Study

Is a serverless Cassandra really more cost effective than managing your own Apache Cassandra™ clusters? Analyst firm GigaOm conducted a comprehensive study, comparing serverless Cassandra with self-managed Cassandra.

Cassandra Total Cost of Ownership Study Cover
  • 75% overall savings
  • 3x less complexity (not specific to migration)
  • 22% lower infrastructure costs

This study examines the full cost and true value of Apache Cassandra self-managed on Google Cloud (GCP) and the cost of a managed, serverless, DBaaS built on Cassandra (DataStax Astra DB). Costs include dedicated compute hardware (for self-managed Cassandra), cost per read and write operation (on serverless Cassandra), storage growth (each write operation adds new data) and people cost in our three-year total cost of ownership calculations.
